The Building Regulations are Statutory, meaning that they MUST be followed without question. It is very difficult to follow rules that you are not aware of, however, the Building Regulations state that lack of knowledge cannot be used as a defence for not complying with the Regulations.
As soon as anyone mentions Building Regulations, electricians automatically think Part P, which relates specifically to electrical installations in certain premises. That’s all well and good but the problem is that there are other Building Regulations that apply to us as electricians. As an example, the passage of fire through a building would come under Part B. If you were drilling through a wall, from one room to another, the hole must be repaired to the same level of fire resistance as before the hole was drilled. There are many other Building Regulations that may be inadvertently breached, and these could end up with the electrician responsible finding themselves in court.
We need to know about these regulations and how to comply with them. This is where the Building Regulations Course comes into its own; it will make you aware of all the areas in which your installation may stray from Part P into other areas of the Building Regulations, as well as going through ways to comply with the relevant Sections.
